Ethiopia is the 2rd largest country in Africa, with a population of over 100 million people. Ethiopia is considered one of the oldest and most culturally diverse countries in the world. Ethiopia is plagued by extreme poverty and ethnic conflict. The majority of Ethiopia’s population lives on less than $2 per day. Mental health services in Ethiopia are sparse and inadequate. There is an insufficient number of trained mental health workers in the country and some have never heard or been trained to treat autism. Research has shown that people living with severe mental illness in Ethiopia have a shorter life expectancy than the general population. Autism-related stigma and discrimination in Ethiopia can also result in rejection and demonization, of those living with this neurodevelopment disorder and their caregivers. In fact, some Ethiopians believe that these children have been afflicted by a demonic force due to their parent’s sins. This profound lack of understanding and ambivalence in Ethiopia concerning those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) further disadvantages this vulnerable and marginalized group.
